Tuesday Morning (3/24/2020), Mayor McInnis met with County Officials, the City of Hico Administrator and Mayor, and Hamilton and Hico Independent School District Representatives.

City Hall has taken another step toward the recommendations for social distancing from CDC guidelines and closed the City Hall and Police offices to foot traffic. The City is working closely with Dr. Randy Lee, who is the County Health official at the Hamilton Hospital. Dr. Lee said that as of last night, Hamilton County does not have any confirmed cases of COVID-19. At this point, we are discussing ways not to overwhelm the healthcare system. Social distancing and eliminating nonessential commerce will slow the speed of dispersion. The hospital is in good shape as far as supplies are concerned. The important takeaway from this meeting is that all people of all ages need to follow the guidelines. When a young adult does not comply, that puts others, young and old, at risk. Along with putting people at risk, failure to follow the guidelines puts the Police in an awkward and uncomfortable situation to have to enforce the Governor’s temporary laws.

Mayor McInnis is working with Hamilton ISD to create a wireless network for free internet services at the Southeast corner of the Hamilton Square. This will give the schools another resource to help students complete their online studies.

Mayor McInnis and the city council are monitoring the latest statute changes in Municipal Law. By relaxing some requirements, Governor Abbott has given tools to the City of Hamilton and all Local Governments which will allow a faster response to the COVID-19 threat. Some of the Statutes that have changed are the Open Meetings Act and those concerning the May Elections. Suspension of provisions of the Open Meetings Act allows City leaders to meet via conference call if necessary. The Governor has also allowed cities to postpone the May election until November.

As we learn of new information, it will be posted ASAP.
